Fence staples, also known as U-nails (items 17-01 and 17-02) have the body of a nail bent into the shape of a “U” and pointed on both ends. They serve to attach deer fence (both polypropylene and metal hexagrid) to trees and wood posts. We offer two varieties. The larger 2-inch ones (item 17-01) are preferred for most purposes. The smaller 1.25-inch ones (item 17-02) are good for use on thin-barked trees like maples, and also for attaching deer fence to wood posts, houses, or existing wooden fences. For more information see Deer Fence Installation: Attaching Deer Fence to Trees and Wooden Deer Fence Posts. Zip-lock Ties and Puller-Cutter
Use black zip-ties with a UV-protector (items 17-04 thru 17-07) to attach deer fencing to metal posts (both angle-iron and round posts). One can also use zip-ties to join sections of polypropylene fencing to each other, to attach polypropylene fencing to a monofilament line, and to attach a poplypropylene fence to a metal hexagrid skirt. Relatively weak (40-pound strength) zip-ties are not suited to all tasks; the heavy-duty (120-pound strength) ties are generally preferred and should be used in most cases. Eight-inch ties will usually do the job, though 14-inchers can occasionally prove useful. If you are not using round metal posts a zip-tie puller/cutter (product 17-08) is not recommended–a small tin snip or wire cutter does just as well for cutting off the ends of hand-fastened ties, and the puller/cutter tends to over-tighten (and thereby weaken) the zip-ties. However, it is useful for attaching zip-ties to round metal posts, where a good deal of tension (together with use of a brace band at the top of each post) is desirable. The puller/cutter we offer (see illustration above) is a high-quality metal tool vastly superior to the plastic versions commonly sold elsewhere. Stanley Hog-ringer and Staples
The Stanley hog-ringer shown above (item 17-09) offers a quicker way of joining polypropylene fencing sections together, attaching poly and metal deer fencing to monofilament or tie-wire cables, and attaching a metal hexagrid skirt to a polypropylene fence. This tool takes open-ended 9/16" “hog-ring” staples (item 17-10) and easily closes them into a ring-shape around anything you wish to join. |
