It is best to use one support cable (11-gauge nylon monofilament line) with polypropylene fencing and another (8-gauge nylon monofilament line) with metal hexagrid fencing. With metal hex use one line along the top to support the fencing and three more lines at six-inch intervals to raise the effective height of the fence to seven feet (recall that half a foot of the metal hex should be turned out at the bottom of the fence and staked down to prevent deer from going under the fence). For more information about these monofilament lines and their uses, see Deer Fence Installation: Securing the Deer Fence Top. To terminate and tighten these lines use gripples and a gripple tightener (items 16-03 thru 16-05A). Or, alternatively, one can use small oval metal sleeves and a crimping tool (items 16-06 and 16-07) or U-bolt cable clamps (item 16-08). In addition, to periodically take up slack that develops in the monofilament line it is convenient to use a circular wire tensioner and to tighten it with a wire tensioner arm (items 16-09 and 16-10). At a corner, or at the end of a fence line, secure the cable with one or more earth anchors and heavy-duty wire (items 16-11 and 02-07HT1; for more information see Deer Fence Installation: Deer Fence Corners).
