Step 8: Post Attachers

1) If you are using trees as posts, plan on attaching the deer fencing to each tree with five 2-inch U-nails (item 17-01, sold in bags of about 50). If you are using wood posts, plan on attaching the deer fencing to each post with five 1.25-inch U-nails (item 17-02, sold in bags of about 70). If you are using angle-iron posts plan on attaching the deer fencing to each post with five 8-inch zip-lock ties—either nylon (item 17-04 sold in bags of 100) or black-coated stainless steel (17-11 sold in bags of 100). Finally, if you are using round posts plan on attaching the deer fencing to each post with seven zip-lock ties, either 14-inch nylon ties (item 17-06 sold in bags of 100) or 8-inch stainless steel ties (item 17-11 sold in bags of 100).

2) Choose between nylon or stainless steel zip ties on the basis of price (see below) and the length of time you want the ties to last. The less expensive nylon ties have an estimated life of 5-6 years, while the stainless steel ties should last the life of the deer fence. In general, we recommend the nylon ties for polypropylene deer fences (expected to last 10-15 years) and the stainless steel ties for metal hexagrid deer fences (expected to last 30 years).

3) Calculate the total number of U-nails or zip-ties you will need, divide this by the number in each bag (see table below) and enter the appropriate number(s) in the table.

4) You may wish to get a puller-cutter for applying the zip-lock ties (item 17-08 for nylon ties or 17-13 for stainless steel ties), but this is not a necessity. If you get the puller-cutter for the stainless steel ties and are attaching them to round posts, it is advisable to get the 14-inch ties (item 17-12) instead of the 8-inch ties for ease of application.
